Overview: This is an ACcORD affiliated PhD project. A mixed methods strategy will explore the experiences of caregivers of people with dementia recruited from outpatient geriatric health services. Data will be collected from a cross-sectional sample of caregivers via a self-report questionnaire administered either online or by pen-and-paper, and semi-structured interviews will be conducted over the telephone. This study aims to explore: 1) Caregiver perceptions of the quality of disclosure of the dementia diagnosis based on recommendations from the literature regarding best-practice; 2) Concordance between caregiver preferences for diagnosis disclosure and actual experiences of care; and 3) Association between socio-demographic characteristics of people with dementia and their caregivers and the quality of diagnosis disclosure.
